Post Problems
Sometimes, yes life distracts me. I can’t sit my booty down long enough to jot something down. I’m also shockingly a bit particular, something I’m realizing later in life. I normally don’t like to post anything just to post.
That’s how I was in radio. I hated to do a break just because the clock said it was time to crack the mic. It sucked if it talk break time and the talk over song had a 1 second intro. Can’t say much with that time, although I would certainly try...if not switch my break completely, much to the chagrin of the boss. I was never a time and temp jock. I really wanted to say something funny or relevant or give a little fact. I couldn’t just talk to talk.
Or so I thought.
But I digress and as I do, I realize….here I am with a little post. Funny how that works out
The posting “problem” (is it really a problem in the grand scheme of things?) but the issue isn’t quite frankly, a lack of something to write about. The real rub is this-I have too much to write about.
So many thoughts and fragments run through my tiny little brain on a daily basis that it’s hard to know where to start. So sometimes I start everywhere and then end nowhere.
Yes, that in a nutshell is the story of my life my friends. So many beginnings, so many things started and nothing is finished.
Writing isn’t easy, just like opening up a microphone isn’t as easy as everyone thinks. The biggest problem I’ve always had is how to wrap it up. And how to wrap it up smoothly, in a compelling fashion with a pretty little flourishing bow.
The other thing is my audience. In radio, for the most part, the station format dictated who we were talking to-the “target demo” that was the catalyst for one to one communication. Radio is theater of the mind, and in order for anyone to buy into it; every single person has to think the jock is talking directly to him or her.
No small feat. The same goes for writing, but sometimes knowing who my audience is holds me back. The gripes and groans and opinions I want to ramble on about don’t seem appropriate nor interesting to the people I know are out there. You have to play to the audience. It's not what you want to hear, or write about...it's what your listeners/readers want. It takes awhile to learn that, and even then…it's still a hard rule to follow.
Not the prettiest bow, but it’ll have to do for today.
Radio Demystification 101
A Radio Clock: Essentially the schedule of music, talk breaks and commercials
Song Intro Time: The instrumental length at the beginning of a song that a Top 40/AC jock can talk up.
Hitting the Post: Talking up an intro perfectly..ending the exact time the vocals start without chatting over the vocals.
Rock stations are generally different, as jocks in those formats generally talk more before and after a song, not over the song. My only experience with that was college radio, which led to some hilarious 10 minute breaks about MINUTIA…(yes kinda like this blog.) ☺

But I'm suppose to be Susan!

Song of the day: "My Name is Not Susan" Whitney Houston
A long forgotten dance gem in my opinion.
I loved "talking out" of this song on the radio, because simple humor amuses me most.
" 10:52, Whitney Houston there, who's not Susan, but I am!"
I used to think that was sooo funny. But it probably wasn't to most people. Which can explain alot.
Yes, my name is Susan. And I'm here to claim it.
What got me on this protective Susan rant is something I just read about- a new "mockumentary" that will be appearing on the web. And it stars Sarah Silverman. Who I don't particularly care for. I don't know why. Some would say it's jealousy. But whatever, the point is...her characters name is SUSAN! grrrrr.
But of course I've just given the show a plug, so there you go. Any P.R is better than no P.R I always say. Look at Britney if you don't belive me for heavens sakes!
But I digress...
Sarah Silverman playing a Susan is not as bad as the mother of all eyebrows lady who I really really don't care for, Brooke Shields who did a show called "Suddenly Susan" for what seemed like forever. I could NOT believe Susan was her characters name. I took it as a personal assault. Back then I was on the air and I would rail about it constantly. The universe had plotted against me. That too would probably explain alot.
Cute Susan side note, while Googling for "Suddenly Susan" I came across a interesting little blog by that name.
See, my "Susan bashing" is random. For example, I didn't mind Madonna's character being called Susan in "Desperately Seeking Susan".
Although I always wonder-Why does the flower's name have to be Black Eyed Susan??
Yes, my name is Susan and I'm a bit of a a nut job.
It's been about six months since I started this blog, and I wasn't quite sure where I was going with it. I just knew it was something I really wanted to do. And felt I should do. People have been asking me, what is your blog about? And I usually say "pop culture", which is partially true. But really it's about me I guess, and my little observations on the world. And it's a release for rants that would normally be reserved for the radio.
We are all "me centric". We all think the universe revolves around us, and can't understand why people would not agree with us, hence the reason there is so much bickering going on in the world.
I used to say, "I'm the sun, and you are all planets circling me"
And someone said to me, "Well in that case, I want to be Pluto, as far away from the sun as possible"
That brings you down a peg.
Because in the end, it's the over sized ego that gets you, no matter what your name is.

It's the First Post-Finally!
Song of the Day
“ A Little Less Conversation a Little More Action”
Elvis Presley
My name is Susan, and I am a Recovering DJ.
For over 10 years, I made a living turning on a microphone and speaking into it between songs and commercials.
Doesn’t sound so glamorous when you put it that way eh?
For a cornucopia of reasons I’ve been attempting to get a blog up for AGES.
I started this one: Sleeping Pretty Good in Seattle
But for a myriad of motives, I inexplicably dropped it.
For the last 18 months or so I’ve been reading books and articles and other blogs on how to blog-
but not actually blogging.
I am very easily distracted.
Lots o' Conversation with Li'l Action.
So why am I a recovering DJ? Well I don't work in radio anymore.
But for me, I have finally admitted radio is like the love you never really got over.
I say I am over it. I tell everyone I am.
But every once in awhile when I am not paying attention it creeps out.
The secret devotion lingering in the back cupboard of my cluttered mind.
This blog is an attempt to fill that void. To babble and entertain, to ramble and perchance to amuse. A radio break via blog.
I have spent many many a day trying to figure out what I want to do with the rest of my life,
and it is time to start doing something, however small, however insignificant.
I’ll pontificate on the latest pop culture that suites ME-the "Blog Runner" the "Former Talent."
The writing is sophomoric and the grammar is atrocious. But I have seen worse out there in the blogasphere.
And with that, for now I say” Good Day, and May the Good News be Yours."
